In the abstract Rip Van Winkle, released Fall 2010, an administrator of the College confronted a student for his actions while he was intoxicated. When the abstract was released, a number of concerns came up in abstract discussions about the relationship of the administrator to the student during the trial, as the administrator was acting “on behalf of the College” rather than out of personal concern. Honor Council discussed these issues and consented to the spirit of the following guidelines:
When a student is believed to have violated the Honor Code it may be appropriate for an administrator to confront on behalf of the College. However, even when a confronting party confronts on behalf of another body, the confronting party should have a personal involvement in the case. Personal involvement does not mean that the confronting party was necessarily witness to or directly involved in the incident in question, but the confronting party should have been affected by the incident in some manner. This personal concern on the part of the confronting party is important to the goal of restoration in an Honor Council proceeding.
